The KIM MaeJa ChangMu Dance Company (ChangMu), under the artistic direction of KIM MaeJa, was founded in December 1976 with a dual mission. First, to reconstruct dance movement that is representative of various Korean styles of dance; and second, to create new movements and formats that reflect the thought and lifestyle of contemporary life in South Korea.
Recognized today as the leading performer and creator of Korean contemporary dance, and over the past 35 years touring 100 cities in 20 countries, ChangMu has introduced the world to the artistry and beauty of Korean dance. Steeped in rich Korean culture and history, with a mastery of traditional Korean dance, including shaman dance, Buddhist dance, folk dance, and court dance, ChangMu has helped bring Korean dance to the world stage. Ms. Kim’s stunning blending of contemporary and traditional choreography celebrates the future of Korean dance while honoring the country’s rich history.
Since 1976, ChangMu has transformed Korean dance through innovative choreography by introducing new dance vocabularies and innovative intertwining of movement with spoken word and live painting. This has stimulated a creative revitalization of Korean dance, enriching its resources with new idioms of movement and form. But most importantly, this innovation is based firmly on a solid foundation of traditional Korean dance, which includes shamanic dance, Buddhist dance, Korean folk dance, and traditional Korean court dance.
Touring during the past 35 years, ChangMu has introduced the world to the rich spirit and artistry of Korean dance at many of the world’s most important theaters and festivals such as the Deutsche Opera Berlin, the Cairo Opera House, Kremlin Congress Hall, the Kirov Theatre, the Lyon Dance Biennale, just to name a few.
